This session, aimed at middle- and high-school students and educators, will feature a panel of students and educators discussing the current classroom climate in terms of student and teacher voice, freedom of speech in the school setting, social media as a means of civic action, and opportunities for student civic action both inside and outside their schools. The panel will address current social and political climates and best practices for identifying and managing polarization in our school communities, as well as the ability for civic education to empower students to effect positive change. Students and educators will share resources and tools they have used and plan to use in order to promote civil discourse and greater shared understanding between and among competing interests and perspectives. Registrants will have an opportunity to engage with the panel during a closing Q&A.
