SUMMARY:Reenvisioning Civic Learning in the Face of Global Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will be hosted in partnership with EARTHDAY.ORG and CFR Education from the Council on Foreign Relations as a part of Civic Learning Week. \nFrom extreme weather events to anxiety-inducing headlines\, students are increasingly inundated with climate disruptions in their lives. In this Civic Learning Week session\, explore how educators and students can turn climate anxiety into action by leaning into the next frontier of civic engagement: climate education. So why is understanding climate change crucial to civic education? \nIn this webinar\, presented by EARTHDAY.ORG and CFR Education\, presenters will explore why a 21st-century civic education needs to include climate education. Educators can prepare students with the knowledge\, skills\, and perspective to face climate change through responsible citizenry. As climate change continues to disrupt our world—from agriculture and energy to health and national security—teachers can keep students empowered and hopeful by activating the classroom with solutions-based approaches and action-oriented opportunities. \nIn this webinar\, participants will: \n– Understand why making climate connections in civic courses helps build hope and resilience for students.\n– Explore free\, non-partisan\, ready-to-use simulations and lesson plans on climate change and an Earth Month Calendar of activities to engage your students.\n– Discover a Climate Civics Toolkit to build activities into the classroom experience.\n– Ask questions! \nThis session is aimed at teachers of all subjects in middle school\, high school\, and higher education and can be helpful to any educator or guardian navigating how to keep students hopeful amidst the challenges of climate change.

SUMMARY:BECOMING KATHARINE GRAHAM: The Right to Know and The Right to Print
DESCRIPTION:A 2024 Pew Research study revealed significant concerns among Americans about press freedoms and public access to information. BECOMING KATHARINE GRAHAM (2025) and “The Right to Know and The Right to Print” project are one response to these findings. \nJoin documentary Producer Emma Sassoon and Director of Education Fran Sterling to explore the enduring relevance of Katharine Graham’s legacy. Using curated clips from the documentary\, this webinar will explore Graham’s principled leadership of THE WASHINGTON POST\, her defense of press freedoms and protection of the First Amendment during the turbulent 1970s\, the sexism she faced as publisher\, her negotiation of the Pressman’s strike\, and her unwavering commitment to the public’s right to know and the press’s right to print. Participants will revisit key Supreme Court cases on press freedom\, reflect on Graham’s lasting impact on American journalism\, and discuss connections for classrooms and communities to examine today. \nIn our current climate of competing political and economic interests in gathering and reporting the news\, the dominance of social media platforms as news publishers\, and the access of the public to reputable news organizations\, this webinar will remind us of the critical role of the First Amendment in a democracy and\, to quote David Remnick\, “the first and most important job of journalism is to put pressure on power” – to uphold government transparency and protect the public’s right to access information.

SUMMARY:Forgotten No More: Civic Seals and Re-affirming the Civic Mission of Schools
DESCRIPTION:Join state education chiefs from leading states across the country who\, through civic seals\, have found ways to incentivize student learning and preparation for engaged participation in our constitutional democracy. For decades schools have stepped back from their essential civic mission\, de-emphasizing and de-prioritizing civics and social studies disciplines through declining resources and investments of time. The consequence is a public that lacks access to the knowledge\, skills\, and dispositions gained in the classroom that provide the foundation for an informed and engaged populace. Nowhere is this more apparent than how student success is measured\, often exclusively emphasizing reading and math scores at the expense of other essential competencies. This fact results in as much a disservice to our students as it does our democracy: Students who participate in civics are not only more likely to vote\, discuss topics with their neighbors\, and in the betterment of their community\, but also perform better on skills essential to college and career success as well. Recognizing that what gets measured gets valued\, states across the country\, red\, purple\, and blue\, are leading in developing civic seals that signify student success. Come learn about efforts in three leading states as they help inform what can be achieved in all states across the country. \nFeatured Speakers:\n• Beth Ratway\, Principal TA Consultant\, American Institutes for Research (moderator)\n• Jhone M. Ebert\, State Superintendent of Public Instruction\, Nevada\n• Tony Thurmond\, State Superintendent of Public Instruction\, California\n• Richard Woods\, State School Superintendent\, Georgia
