SUMMARY:Chat with Revolutionary Women about Equality
DESCRIPTION:Equality is a key principle in our constitutional democracy\, but how did it evolve from a revolutionary ideal to an important value for all Americans? \nDuring Civic Learning Week\, join GBH Education and actors from Boston’s Freedom Trail for an interactive conversation about the principle of equality through the voices of two remarkable figures: Hannah Adams\, the first woman in the U.S. to work as a professional writer\, and Mercy Otis Warren\, a prominent political writer and historian of the American Revolution. Watch Adams and Warren discuss the meaning of equality in their time as well as their lives and perspectives. As the conversation unfolds students will engage directly with the reenactors\, asking questions to deepen their understanding of how our modern notion of equality was conceived and how different groups sought inclusion in its promise. \nAs students explore this enduring principle through the lens of these historical figures\, they will reflect on their own experiences of equality in the United States today\, bridging the gap between the past and present. This interactive session offers a unique opportunity to examine how the revolutionary ideal of equality continues to shape our society\, inspiring efforts to create a more inclusive nation. \nThis event will be available to watch by registering via Zoom or by watching a live stream on GBH Education’s Facebook and YouTube channels.

SUMMARY:Chat with a Loyalist and Patriot about Liberty
DESCRIPTION:Liberty has a vital place in our constitutional democracy\, but how did it become such an important value for American citizens? \nDuring Civic Learning Week\, step back in time to the eve of the American Revolution. Join GBH Education and actors from Boston’s Freedom Trail for an interactive conversation about the principle of liberty through the eyes of two pivotal figures: Mather Byles\, the witty Loyalist minister who disapproved of violence\, and Henry Knox\, the bookstore owner turned Patriot general\, who would later become a key figure in the Revolution. Watch as they debate what liberty means to them and discuss their lives and perspectives. As the discussion unfolds\, students will be able to engage directly with the reenactors\, asking questions to deepen their understanding of the historical context and how our modern notion of liberty was conceived. \nAs students explore this enduring principle through the lens of these historical figures\, they will be asked to reflect on their own experiences of liberty in the United States today\, bridging the gap between past and present. This interactive session offers a unique opportunity to examine how the revolutionary spirit of liberty continues to influence our society today. \nThis event will be available to watch by registering via Zoom or by watching a live stream on GBH Education’s Facebook and YouTube channels.

SUMMARY:Civil Conversations: Modeling Civil Discourse with Your Students
DESCRIPTION:At a time when Americans feel more divided and disconnected than ever\, teachers may find it challenging to discuss certain topics in the classroom. Democracy thrives when its citizens share a set of norms and understandings to establish common ground that’s rooted in listening\, respect\, authenticity\, and curiosity. How can teachers convey the message that polarizing topics are not necessarily toxic\, and that a healthy American democracy does not mean that everyone agrees? \nJoin hosts Ben Klutsey (Mercatus Center\, George Mason University) and Lindsey Galvao (GBH Education) as they explore the concept of civil discourse and demonstrate why civil discourse is an essential skill that needs to be encouraged and practiced in the classroom. \nIn this FREE webinar for educators of grades 6-12 you will:\n1. Explore the difference between polarization and toxic polarization.\n2. Get practical strategies for implementing civil discourse in the classroom.\n3. Preview several PBS LearningMedia resources from the new Civics Collection that will allow you to incorporate civil discourse in your pre-existing U.S. History\, Government\, or Civics curriculum.
