SUMMARY:Legislative Advocacy Panel: Setting the Civics Learning Agenda for MA
DESCRIPTION:This in-person session at the State House will provide an opportunity for students\, educators and others to engage with legislators and their staff members to make the case for continued investment by the state in civic education. Panelists will include students and teachers from schools that have benefitted from the Civics Teaching and Learning Grants. The panel will also discuss legislative advocacy and the role of the legislative process in supporting civics education. Many panelists are still to be finalized\, but Senator Becca Rausch\, a long time champion for civic education\, will speak. Other speakers will include legislators and/or legislative staff\, educators who have advocated for civics learning in the legislative process\, student activists\, and more. \nThis session is organized by the Massachusetts Civic Learning Coalition.

Under both Democratic and Republican administrations\, the cost of living keeps climbing and no one seems to agree on what’s driving the squeeze or how to fix it. As we head into a new year with midterm elections on the horizon\, tariffs shaking global markets\, a disrupted farm economy\, and the national debt at historic highs\, this program asks a simple question: why is everything so expensive\, and what does that mean for communities like Kansas City? Join American Public Square for a candid\, fact-checked conversation about the forces shaping our wallets. Our panel of economic experts will unpack the pressures behind the rising cost of living and explore solutions we may be overlooking. In-person and virtual options available. Doors will open at 5:30 PM for a Member Happy Hour. The event will start at 6 PM\, followed by a post-event “After the Square” reception open to all attendees. \nAmerican Public Square provides forums to build stronger\, more connected communities through civil discourse\, engagement\, and education. We host fact-based conversations about urgent topics\, convening subject matter experts and creating community spaces for necessary discussions. DESCRIPTION:In a time of deep polarization and civic disengagement\, experiential learning offers a powerful\, research-backed way to revitalize civil discourse and cultivate shared civic identity. This session\, presented by the Center for Civic Education\, Generation Citizen\, Mikva Challenge\, and the Stuart Foundation will showcase how civic education rooted in founding principles fosters transformative learning and stronger communities. This session will highlight the work done by the Task Force on Experiential Civic Learning\, and bring it to life with students who will speak to their experiences in various experiential civic programs. Drawing on decades of field experience and research\, we will highlight programs that build students’ constitutional knowledge\, strengthen discourse skills\, and nurture the dispositions of responsible\, informed engagement. Participants will explore how students in classrooms\, afterschool programs\, and community-based projects engage deeply with principles of constitutional democracy and the common good through authentic civic experiences. From simulated congressional hearings to student-led projects\, experiential learning enables young people to “do democracy” rather than just learn about it. The result is life-changing—students understand their rights\, listen across divides\, and are prepared to lead in their communities. This session offers a fast-paced overview of EAD-aligned civic learning models that work.
