SUMMARY:NC Civic Learning Week
DESCRIPTION:Civic Learning Week (March 10-14\, 2025) brings together students\, educators\, policymakers\, and leaders in the public and private sectors to highlight and further energize the movement for civic education in states and communities across the nation. \nIn North Carolina\, Civic Learning Week is led by North Carolina Civics Coalition (NC3)\, a nonpartisan initiative dedicated to strengthening and advancing K-12 civic education across the Tarheel State. NC3 is managed by K-12 civic literacy and youth civic leadership champion GenerationNation. \nHere are a few ways NC educators\, students\, families\, and others can celebrate civic learning week! https://bit.ly/NC_CLW25

SUMMARY:DC Civics Coalition preliminary meeting
DESCRIPTION:Maryland has its Civic Education Coalition\, Virginia its Virginia Civics Coalition\, but there is as yet no similar organization in Washington\, DC. In this politically tumultuous time\, there is arguably no better moment to establish a DC Civics Coalition — DC Civics\, for short\, and provisionally — in our nation’s capital. DC Civics could connect diverse District stakeholders\, share pertinent info\, foster collaboration\, and advance civic education policies that help strengthen democracy in DC\, and America\, for generations to come. \nFollowing up on recent CivxNow Coalition meetings\, a first step is to connect via an email list those interested in being part of a DC Civics Coalition so we may begin gathering the info we need to understand the current landscape in DC (e.g.\, stakeholders\, leaders\, gatekeepers\, relevant policies in place\, obstacles\, opportunities\, and potential funding to fuel DC Civics). \nIf you’re interested in being on the DC Civics Coalition email list\, please fill out this form to help us learn about you\, and you’ll get added to the list. This moderated list will keep you informed periodically of DC Civics meetings and other information to advance the Coalition: https://bit.ly/subscribedccivics \nSecond\, if you’re able to attend this initial DC Civics Zoom mtg\, please (a) mark your Calendar\, (b) copy the Zoom mtg link below\, and (c) please email me at paul@learninglife.info to let me know you plan to attend. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86178036043 \nHere are the preliminary questions we’ll be discussing and crowdsourcing your answers to via Google sheets: \n1. Players: Who/What are the individuals and organizations in or around DC that currently play a role in DC civ ed administration and policymaking? \n2. Members or Allies: What individuals and organizations (businesses\, advocacy or service nonprofits\, membership associations\, govt agencies) are potential DC Civics Coalition members or allies\, including funders? \n3. What Exists: What civ ed policies are currently in place in DC? How well are these policies implemented? \n4. Obstacles and Opportunities: What are some of the obstacles and opportunities you see for civ ed in DC? \n5. Other Questions: What other questions should we be seeking answers to in this initial fact-finding phase of DC Civics’ development? \nPlease share this meeting with anyone you think may be interested. \nThank you! \nNote: the attached photo collage is of Learning Life’s own DMV Democracy Learning Community (DLC) \, not the DC Civics Coalition\, since we don’t have an event poster for this DC Civics first mtg. If you’d like to learn more about the DLC\, visit: https://learninglife.info/dlc/ \nPaul Lachelier\nFounder & Director\nLearning Life\npaul@learninglife.info

SUMMARY:Speaking Freely: Examining Free Speech in Modern America
DESCRIPTION:Hosted in partnership with American Public Square at Jewell\, the first program of American Public Square’s Civility Examined series\, “Speaking Freely” will address the question of whether free speech is undermining American democracy or is essential to its survival. More details on panelists to come. \nThis program will be livestreamed and hosted in person at the National WWI Museum and Memorial. The evening will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m. CT\, followed by the start of the panel at 6:00 p.m. CT. \nHosted in partnership with American Public Square at Jewell.

SUMMARY:Understanding Young People’s Political and Civic Engagement as a Counter to Democratic Backsliding
DESCRIPTION:As democracies around the world face increasing pressure\, from voter suppression and disinformation to disengagement and distrust\, young people are stepping up to defend and reimagine civic life. This session examines how youth political and civic engagement is not only a sign of hope\, but a strategic response to democratic backsliding. \nTogether\, we’ll explore how young people are organizing movements\, influencing policy\, and demanding representation in systems that have historically marginalized their voices. We’ll dive into the data and real-world examples that show how youth-led action can reinvigorate democratic institutions and create a more equitable future. \nParticipants will leave with a clearer understanding of what drives youth civic participation\, the systemic barriers they face\, and how educators\, organizations\, and institutions can support their leadership in meaningful\, lasting ways. \nThis session is a must-attend for anyone committed to youth empowerment and the future of democracy.
