SUMMARY:Tocqueville on Faith and Civic Virtue
DESCRIPTION:Join Civic Spirit for an interactive seminar exploring faith and civic virtue through the work of Alexis de Tocqueville. \nDemocracy in America (1835\, 1840)\, which Alexis de Tocqueville wrote to teach modern democrats the “art of being free\,” is perhaps the best treatise on American civic education that we have; Tocqueville asserted in this work that America cannot remain free without widespread religious belief. In our session\, we shall explore what he meant by this startling assertion\, discuss whether it is still true today\, and consider how we\, as civic educators\, should treat the subject of religion in our classrooms. \nPresenter:\nProfessor Sandy Kessler now teaches political theory and American political thought at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City after spending most of his career at North Carolina State University in Raleigh\, NC. He is the author of Tocqueville’s Civil Religion: American Christianity and the Prospects for Freedom (1994) and the editor of Tocqueville’s Democracy in America (2000) abridged for classroom use. He is currently working on a book to be called Classic American Perspectives on Civic Education. \nCivic Spirit educates\, inspires\, and empowers schools across faith traditions to enhance civic belonging\, knowledge\, and responsibility in their student and faculty communities. SUMMARY:American Lesson Plan: Mapping the Landscape of Secondary US History Education
DESCRIPTION:“What are schoolchildren being taught about our nation’s history?!” Among education reformers and activists\, the question raises alarm\, often grounded in broad assumptions about the possibility for politics to shape what happens in the classroom. About two years ago\, the American Historical Association decided to take the question more literally. In the multistage Mapping the Landscape of Secondary US History Education project\, an AHA research team set out to describe the contours of a vast and varied terrain—an empirical grounding for ongoing debates and deliberations about the teaching of the American past. After a year and a half of interviewing social studies administrators\, surveying US history teachers\, coding state legislation\, and appraising district-level curricula\, the team has some answers. In this session\, the Mapping research team (historians Nick Kryczka\, Whit Barringer\, and Scot McFarlane) share their research from the field—and engage webinar participants in a discussion of how history’s civic function in K-12 education is faring in a polarized moment.

SUMMARY:Knit Democracy Together: Representing All Voices
DESCRIPTION:Gather with civically minded crafters to deepen your knowledge of democracy while knitting or crocheting a piece of a collaborative sculpture of the New Hampshire State House. (You can participate without knitting too!) Artist and former election lawyer Eve Jacobs-Carnahan will give a presentation and lead discussion about redistricting (gerrymandering) and nonpartisan alternatives to traditional primaries. You’ll learn how these mechanisms of the electoral process affect all of us\, no matter where we live. Modeled on the idea of a knitting circle\, this friendly gathering connects community members who want to strengthen democracy.

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence\, Elections\, and the Future of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:From algorithmic news feeds to deep fakes\, AI is poised to transform people’s day to day engagement with politics. On a broader scale\, the role of AI in transnational election interference and surveillance has led to international controversy as nations around the world struggle to respond. Bridging the everyday and the international\, the National Liberty Museum and the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia present a panel exploring how AI might shift democratic norms and influence democratic procedures in our election year and in the realm of global politics. Convening a panel of industry\, academic\, and government professionals in AI and democratic monitoring\, we ask not just what is happening\, but what to do.

SUMMARY:Learning from Young People: Implications for Civic Education and Engagement
DESCRIPTION:All to often when students’ civic readiness is discussed\, the voices of young people about their lived experience and the impact it has on shaping their civic outlook and leadership is left out of the conversation. This fall\, the Institute for Citizens and Scholars released data from a new national study on 18–24-year-old Americans’ knowledge\, civic engagement\, and commitment to democracy. The survey highlights important trends that can be key lessons for educators and policymakers interested in strengthening civic education and our democracy at large. \nThis interactive virtual discussion will bring together youth leaders from Mikva Challenge’s action civics programming with Jessica Sutter\, the Chief of Civic Learning Initiatives from the Institute for Citizens and Scholar and lead designer of the research to discuss the core findings from the national survey. In dialogue with Jessica\, the youth will share what resonates with them from the survey’s findings\, what were the civic learning and engagement opportunities that most inspired them to be active civic leaders\, what they notice about their peers in terms of civic knowledge\, attitudes and behaviors and their recommendations about what schools and community organizations can do to inspire their generation to be civically engaged.

SUMMARY:Civil Conversations: Modeling Civil Discourse with Your Students
DESCRIPTION:At a time when Americans feel more divided and disconnected than ever\, teachers may find it challenging to discuss certain topics in the classroom. Democracy thrives when its citizens share a set of norms and understandings to establish common ground that’s rooted in listening\, respect\, authenticity\, and curiosity. How can teachers convey the message that polarizing topics are not necessarily toxic\, and that a healthy American democracy does not mean that everyone agrees? \nJoin hosts Ben Klutsey (Mercatus Center\, George Mason University) and Lindsey Galvao (GBH Education) as they explore the concept of civil discourse and demonstrate why civil discourse is an essential skill that needs to be encouraged and practiced in the classroom. \nIn this FREE webinar for educators of grades 6-12 you will:\n1. Explore the difference between polarization and toxic polarization.\n2. Get practical strategies for implementing civil discourse in the classroom.\n3. Preview several PBS LearningMedia resources from the new Civics Collection that will allow you to incorporate civil discourse in your pre-existing U.S. History\, Government\, or Civics curriculum.
