SUMMARY:250 & Beyond: Honoring and inspiring service across America
DESCRIPTION:The spirit of service has always been fundamental to our national character and essential to our democracy. In 2026\, America will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, providing an ideal opportunity to celebrate the American spirit of service — a spirit so powerfully expressed in the closing words of the Declaration of Independence itself. \n250 & Beyond is a national initiative\, led by a coalition of leading service organizations\, to create inspiring\, inclusive\, and enduring exhibitions to honor service in ALL its forms in communities\, schools\, libraries\, and museums all across the country. It is a call to action\, honoring our past\, celebrating our present and inspiring our future\, helping us respect our differences and transcend our divisions. If our nation is to last another 250 years\, we must renew and sustain the American spirit of service among all our people and institutions. Your organization\, school\, community or you as an individual can be part of this national movement.

SUMMARY:Rap and Redemption on Death Row: Seeking Justice and Finding Purpose Behind Bars
DESCRIPTION:“What leads someone to take another’s life? What do we owe those whom we incarcerate? What is\, or what should be\, the purpose of the United States carceral system? How can the impulses that lead to violences be transformed\, and what role can art play in that transformation? Are there limits to redemption?” \nRap and Redemption on Death Row: Seeking Justice and Finding Purpose Behind Bars seeks to explore the answers to these difficult questions through the testimony of Alim Braxton (a.k.a. Rrome Alone)–a writer\, rapper\, and activist living on North Carolina’s Death Row in Raleigh. Please join COMPACT and BEJI as we welcome Alim and author Mark Katz–the John P. Barker Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill–to Brandeis University for a community book release and discussion. Rap and Redemption on Death Row is digitally available for free through the Brandeis Library for faculty\, staff\, and students. \nThis event is a part of DEIS Impact 2025 and the Civic Learning and Democracy Engagement (CLDE) Coalition and Civic Learning Week.

SUMMARY:America 250 and the Landscape of History Education
DESCRIPTION:In this Civic Learning Week event\, Sarah Weicksel (Director of Research and Publications\, and incoming Executive Director\, American Historical Association) will moderate a conversation with iCivics Chief Education Officer Emma Humphries and historians Edward Ayers (University of Richmond)\, Katharina Matro (Walter Johnson High School)\, and David Blight (Yale University and president\, Organization of American Historians). \nIn the fall of 2024\, the American Historical Association (AHA) released a groundbreaking report based on a survey of 3\,000 secondary school teachers\, more than 200 interviews\, and analysis of thousands of pages of educational materials. AMERICAN LESSON PLAN: TEACHING US HISTORY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS (bit.ly/AHAlesson) confirmed what America’s educators know: US history teachers are public servants whose primary concern is helping their students learn central elements of our nation’s history. \nThe panelists will discuss the findings of the report and how teachers are also preparing to use the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding to engage students in civics and a deeper understanding of our past. \nTopics of discussion will include how teachers:\n• Encourage students to read and understand founding documents to prepare them for informed civic engagement.\n• Navigate this moment and focus on history through primary sources and lessons designed to help students learn to think critically\, while developing an understanding of the importance of civic participation.\n• Make curricular decisions over the materials they use\, despite the challenges of legislative actions and local and state mandates.\n• Rely on educational resources from a short list of trusted sites led by federal institutions including the Library of Congress\, the National Archives\, and Smithsonian museums.\n• Are thinking about the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding as an opportunity to engage students in a deeper understanding of our national origin story.

SUMMARY:Building Bridges: Teachers\, Museums\, and Deeper Civic Learning
DESCRIPTION:Calling all educators and museum professionals: You’re invited to join the National Liberty Museum and the National Constitution Center to explore how museums can serve as trusted partners in classroom civic learning. While museums are widely regarded as reliable\, nonpartisan sources of information\, teachers currently face a range of challenges as well as a decline in public confidence. This session offers an opportunity to bridge this gap through collaboration and shared strategies. \nMuseum professionals will share actionable\, nonpartisan approaches to support teachers through co-curating and co-producing educational resources. Educators\, in turn\, will hear from their peers about how they’ve used museums as trusted partners in civic learning. We’ll conclude the session with breakout rooms where educators can share their insights and discuss the additional support they need from museums to make deeper civic learning a reality in their classrooms. \nTogether\, educators and museum professionals can build partnerships that empower teachers\, inspire students\, and strengthen the role of both museums and schools in their communities.

SUMMARY:Free Speech in an Era of Digital Platforms
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar\, we consider the scope of rights granted to Americans by the First Amendment and examine both the benefits and drawbacks of free speech in the era of digital platforms like Facebook\, YouTube\, Twitch\, and TikTok. Learn more about how digital platforms are reshaping people’s ideas about the scope and limitations of freedom of expression\, and discuss approaches to regulating harmful content including de-platforming\, content moderation\, and cancel culture.\nLet’s discuss: Who’s responsible for quality of digital content? SUMMARY:Chat with Revolutionary Women about Equality
DESCRIPTION:Equality is a key principle in our constitutional democracy\, but how did it evolve from a revolutionary ideal to an important value for all Americans? \nDuring Civil Learning Week\, join GBH Education and actors from Boston’s Freedom Trail for an interactive conversation about the principle of equality through the voices of two remarkable figures: Hannah Adams\, the first women in the U.S. to work as a professional writer\, and Mercy Otis Warren\, a prominent political writer and historian of the American Revolution. Watch Adams and Warren discuss the meaning of equality in their time as well as their lives and perspectives. As the conversation unfolds students will engage directly with the reenactors\, asking questions to deepen their understanding of how our modern notion of equality was conceived and how different groups sought inclusion in its promise. \nAs students explore this enduring principle through the lens of these historical figures\, they will reflect on their own experiences of equality in the United States today\, bridging the gap between the past and present. This interactive session offers a unique opportunity to examine how the revolutionary ideal of equality continues to shape our society\, inspiring efforts to create a more inclusive nation. \nThis event will be available to watch by registering via Zoom or by watching a live stream on GBH Education’s Facebook and YouTube channels.
