SUMMARY:Civil Rights\, Civic Action
DESCRIPTION:This program helps students make connections between the organized nonviolent actions of the civil rights movement and civic action for justice today. By examining photographs of less well-known civil rights activists and learning how they used the tools of democracy to fight for justice and equality\, students discover what led President Kennedy to deliver his Televised Address on Civil Rights. In a final activity\, students reflect on a local\, national\, or international issue of concern and identify a civic action they can take to help address it.

SUMMARY:Media Detectives Crack the Case of Click Clack Moo!
DESCRIPTION:Developing media literacy and critical thinking skills is essential – and possible – in elementary school when you meet kids where they are. Using the children’s classic Click Clack Moo\, Cows that Type\, this fun elementary classroom game involves children working together to find clues and recognize misinformation in media sources. While in this inquiry process\, they must think critically – read\, share\, and analyze findings – to solve the mystery: exactly how did those cows learn to type? Created by Inquiring Minds Institute’s Student Think Tank\, Brooklyn\, NY\, and filmed in a 3rd grade classroom at Democracy Prep Harlem Elementary School. Runtime approximately 10 minutes.

SUMMARY:MD Council for Social Studies Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:This years conference theme focuses on Maryland’s Civil Rights Journey: Then & Now. Inspired by Governor Wes Moore’s proclamation that 2024 was Maryland’s Year of Civil Rights in order to honor the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Marylanders’ contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. MDCSS seeks to celebrate the learning that took place in 2024 and continue the journey by dedicating this year’s conference to the ongoing evolution of the Civil Rights Movement in Maryland. As Governor Moore said\, \n“Studying history isn’t just about knowing what happened in the past. It’s about knowing our power in the present. That’s what Maryland’s Year of Civil Rights is about…Let’s practice our history\, let’s protect our history\, and let’s participate in our history\, by making history of our own.” \nSocial studies teachers are in a unique position to honor and uplift Maryland’s Civil Rights history as well as inspire future advocates as Civil Rights Issues continue to evolve. Please use the form linked above to share your ideas and contribute to an engaging and inspiring event. Your support is invaluable\, and we look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:The Power of We Creativity Contest
DESCRIPTION:Civic Learning Week highlights the important role that civic education and participation play in strengthening and sustaining democracy in the United States. As America reaches its 250th anniversary\, the need to be civically engaged and strengthen our communities is more important than ever. \nThe National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) believes that young voices have the power to drive change. That’s why we’re launching The Power of We creativity contest\, challenging teens across the country to explore\, analyze\, and share how working together for the common good makes’ communities stronger. \nThis contest isn’t just about your submission—it’s about empowerment. We’re asking you to think critically and creatively about how civic engagement can be used to address issues in your community along with what role civic learning and service can play in creating a thriving community. \nUse your creativity to express your vision for building stronger and more connected communities. Think about how people come together for the common good\, what that idea means in your own life\, and how civic engagement can inspire real change where you live. Consider how learning\, service\, and collaboration can help communities thrive—express those ideas in your own unique and imaginative way. This is your opportunity to unleash your creativity and show the world how young people\, like you\, are building a better future through your art\, videos\, or stories that can inspire thousands and win you recognition for the change you’re already making.

SUMMARY:America's Future Summit
DESCRIPTION:America’s Future Summit celebrates America’s 250th birthday and reimagines civic education for a new generation. Convening Minnesota’s 250 top teens for a civic leadership competition\, students team up to innovate solutions in one of three fields: climate\, education\, and media. Students will emerge as Civic Bridgers — leaders who bridge divides and build a future on hopeful\, ambitious\, and citizen-led solutions. AFS is intentionally designed to update an often one-sided version of America’s story via storytelling\, bridge building\, and collaborative change-making where youth voices lead. This summit is grounded in a core belief: Teens are not guests in this democracy — they are leaders in its future.
