DESCRIPTION:TiP Talks is a student led talk with Boston teen journalists sharing the process\, inspiration and take-aways from their articles. Envision 10 minutes engaging talks with a chance for audience to engage in a Q&A. Subjects range from public transportation\, climate\, sports\, anime and local issues \nOur Speakers for this talk will be: \nKetura Joseph (TiP Reporter\, Freshman) :\nKetura is a passionate young TiP reporter and student at the Brooke High School. Ketura’s passion for writing and robotics is a testament to the importance of exposing young students to diverse experiences and perspectives. As she advances into unfamiliar territory as a freshman\, Ketura understands the value of learning about Black history that goes beyond the traditional frame of slavery.\nOne of the challenges that Ketura and many other Black students face is the limited scope of Black history that is taught in schools. Often\, the focus is solely on the transatlantic slave trade and the Civil Rights Movement. While these events are significant\, they are only a small part of Black history. Comparing her own experiences\, that of teachers and college students Ketura offers a rich perspective of how teaching Black history beyond the frame of slavery empowers students and teachers. Such knowledge empowers students\, teachers\, and college students and helps promote greater appreciation for diversity and inclusivity. \nWilliam Thompson (TiP Reporter\, Freshman)\nWilliam Thompson\, a freshman at the John D. O’Bryant School of Math and Science. Who enjoys music\, sports\, and hanging out with friends. William is using his interests and experiences to bring attention to issues of bias in athletic scouting. William will be discussing how bias can take many forms\, such as racial and socioeconomic biases\, and it can have a significant impact on student-athletes from underrepresented or marginalized communities.\nBy shedding light on these issues\, William is contributing to a larger conversation about how we can create a more equitable system for all student-athletes. \nHome

SUMMARY:Uncommon Ground: Grant Wood and Russell Lee’s Divergent View of Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Join art historian James Swensen to explore Iowa through the divergent views of two artists. When Russell Lee traveled to Iowa in December 1936\, he might have expected to find something out of a Grant Wood painting. Instead\, the photographer in the employ of Roosevelt’s New Deal found a very different scene of destitute farmers facing a hardscrabble existence. The presentation will examine how Lee’s work in Iowa was influenced by Wood and how Lee’s portrait of the state challenged the pastoral and idealized vision for which Wood had become famous.

SUMMARY:Kentucky and the Secession Crisis: A Documentary History
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually for our first Kentucky Military History Museum (KMHM) Speaker Series event! After the 1860 election\, Americans faced civil war. While northern and southern states mobilized for a conflict that would determine the fate of slavery and the nation\, the border state of Kentucky\, riven by indecision\, debated the future of the Union and its place within it. Join us as Dr. Dwight Pitcaithley discusses the political discourse that followed in the months after the election and how it illuminates Kentucky’s struggle toward a decision on whether to remain in the Union or to cast its lot with the slave-holding states of the Confederacy. \nDwight T. Pitcaithley worked for the National Park Service for three decades\, the final decade as its chief historian. Following his retirement from the National Park Service in 2005\, he was a professor of history at New Mexico State University. He is the author/editor of The U.S. Constitution and Secession: A Documentary Anthology of Slavery and White Supremacy and Tennessee Secedes: A Documentary History. \n*TECHNOLOGY: This virtual event will take place via Zoom\, an online meeting platform. Doors open at 6:30pm. \nMaster Slave Husband Wife tells the remarkable true story of Ellen and William Craft\, who escaped slavery through daring\, determination\, and disguise\, with Ellen passing as a wealthy\, disabled White man and William posing as “his” slave. The Crafts’ own 1860 narrative\, Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom\, provides a powerful first-hand account of this extraordinary act of mutual self-emancipation. Yet\, many mysteries remain that the Crafts would not or could not discuss. \nHighlighting her research at the American Antiquarian Society\, Woo reveals the extensive archival sleuthing behind the writing of her new book. Among the questions she explores: What were the prices of freedom? Who remained in the world that the Crafts left behind? What was it like to ride the rails on the famed Overland Mail Route\, don a gentleman’s clothes? The dress of the times\, illuminated with expert contributions from award-winning costume historian and AAS member Lynne Zacek Bassett\, provides vital clues that help render a rich depiction of the period\, during which the Crafts made their unforgettable journey out of the South and ultimately\, out of the Unites States\, in search of freedom. \nlyon Woo is the author of Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom and The Great Divorce: A Nineteenth-Century Mother’s Extraordinary Fight Against Her Husband\, the Shakers\, and Her Times. She has written for The Boston Globe and The Wall Street Journal\, and received support for her research from the Whiting Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities\, among other organizations. She holds a BA in the Humanities from Yale College and a Ph.D. in English from Columbia University. She also held a Peterson Fellowship at the American Antiquarian Society in 2004 where she conducted research for The Great Divorce.

DESCRIPTION:Groundbreaking legislation is about to pass. An international incident is on the horizon. Then\, a crisis at home shocks the nation and the world. The clock is ticking\, and the public wants answers. Invite your students (grades 8 to 12) to find them in the tech-powered simulation game iThrive Sim: Leading Through Crisis. On the iThrive Sim platform\, students play as presidential cabinet and White House staff members tasked with making real-time solo and group decisions in the face of domestic and international crises. Immersed in their roles\, students engage with news\, social media chirps\, direct messages\, and personalized alerts to support their decision-making. Throughout the game\, they consult primary source documents like the 25th Amendment and enlist their social and emotional skills to help them negotiate\, compromise\, and analyze their way through complex challenges together. **Please note that iThrive Sim: Leading Through Crisis is a 60-minute game split into two 30-minute episodes. Each student must have access to a 1:1 device (e.g.\, a laptop\, tablet\, or smartphone) and a reliable Wi-Fi connection to play. Educators who plan on bringing this to their classroom should do the following at least a day before this session: 1. Review and complete the tasks outlined in the Pre-Sim Prep portion of the iThrive Sim: Leading Through Crisis | Teacher Checklist. 2. Ensure you have an active account on www.ithrivesim.org.3. Ensure each student participating in the simulation game has a working 1:1 device (e.g.\, laptop\, tablet\, Chromebook\, or smartphone) and Wi-Fi access. 4.
