SUMMARY:Chat with Revolutionary Women about Equality
DESCRIPTION:Equality is a key principle in our constitutional democracy\, but how did it evolve from a revolutionary ideal to an important value for all Americans? \nDuring Civil Learning Week\, join GBH Education and actors from Boston’s Freedom Trail for an interactive conversation about the principle of equality through the voices of two remarkable figures: Hannah Adams\, the first women in the U.S. to work as a professional writer\, and Mercy Otis Warren\, a prominent political writer and historian of the American Revolution. Watch Adams and Warren discuss the meaning of equality in their time as well as their lives and perspectives. As the conversation unfolds students will engage directly with the reenactors\, asking questions to deepen their understanding of how our modern notion of equality was conceived and how different groups sought inclusion in its promise. \nAs students explore this enduring principle through the lens of these historical figures\, they will reflect on their own experiences of equality in the United States today\, bridging the gap between the past and present. This interactive session offers a unique opportunity to examine how the revolutionary ideal of equality continues to shape our society\, inspiring efforts to create a more inclusive nation. \nThis event will be available to watch by registering via Zoom or by watching a live stream on GBH Education’s Facebook and YouTube channels.

SUMMARY:Students Testify as Constitutional Experts
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, you will witness two teams from two schools who competed this year at the We the People High School Massachusetts State Competition in January. Participants will witness how the We the People program offers students the opportunity to display their learning through the mock congressional hearing process. Prior to the competition\, students first work together to research to answer questions on complex constitutional topics they are studying in the course. During the competition\, students “testify” before a panel of judges to present their research\, and take questions from the judges. The hearing process is used as an authentic assessment model at the end of each unit. The hearing model allows students to demonstrate their learning while developing soft skills in public speaking\, collaboration\, critical thinking and evidence-based writing and editing.

SUMMARY:Reenvisioning Civic Learning in the Face of Global Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will be hosted in partnership with EARTHDAY.ORG and CFR Education from the Council on Foreign Relations as a part of Civic Learning Week. \nFrom extreme weather events to anxiety-inducing headlines\, students are increasingly inundated with climate disruptions in their lives. In this Civic Learning Week session\, explore how educators and students can turn climate anxiety into action by leaning into the next frontier of civic engagement: climate education. So why is understanding climate change crucial to civic education? \nIn this webinar\, presented by EARTHDAY.ORG and CFR Education\, presenters will explore why a 21st-century civic education needs to include climate education. Educators can prepare students with the knowledge\, skills\, and perspective to face climate change through responsible citizenry. As climate change continues to disrupt our world—from agriculture and energy to health and national security—teachers can keep students empowered and hopeful by activating the classroom with solutions-based approaches and action-oriented opportunities. \nIn this webinar\, participants will: \n– Understand why making climate connections in civic courses helps build hope and resilience for students.\n– Explore free\, non-partisan\, ready-to-use simulations and lesson plans on climate change and an Earth Month Calendar of activities to engage your students.\n– Discover a Climate Civics Toolkit to build activities into the classroom experience.\n– Ask questions! \nThis session is aimed at teachers of all subjects in middle school\, high school\, and higher education and can be helpful to any educator or guardian navigating how to keep students hopeful amidst the challenges of climate change.

SUMMARY:Online Teacher Professional Development: Who Are We the People? with James Lafayette and the Center for Civic Education
DESCRIPTION:Written in 1787\, the Constitution has only been amended 27 times in more than 230 years. That’s not to say the document the Framers created was perfect. Its most glaring errors include the omission of recognition for all citizens and the failure to halt slavery. Join the Bob and Marion Wilson Teacher Institute and the Center for Civic Education to examine how the definition of “We the People” has evolved since the writing of the Constitution in 1787. Participants will receive a certificate for 1.5 professional development hours for attending this session. Please contact teacherdevelopment@cwf.org with any questions related to this program.
