DESCRIPTION:Join Civic Spirit for a special event marking 60 years from the Selma Marches. \nPeter Geffen\, a civil rights worker in the historic summers of 1965 and 1966 in Orangeburg\, SC\, will share his firsthand experiences in the Civil Rights Movement and explore the deep relationship between Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. Why did so many young Jewish men and women risk their lives to stand alongside Dr. King in the fight for justice and equality? How did Rabbi Heschel’s leadership inspire and mobilize Jewish participation in the movement? And what lessons can civic educators draw from this alliance today to rekindle its spirit in our divided society? \nPeter A. Geffen\, President and Founder of The Kivunim Institute\, is also the founder of The Park Avenue Synagogue High School\, founder of The Abraham Joshua Heschel School in NYC\, and former Director of the Israel Experience Program for the CRB Foundation. Peter has been a social activist since serving as a civil rights worker for Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. in 1965-66 and has been deeply involved in Arab-Jewish co-existence work since the early 1960s. Peter served as Executive Director of The Center for Jewish History in NYC from 2003-05. SUMMARY:Student Voice in the Classroom and Community
DESCRIPTION:This session\, aimed at middle- and high-school students and educators\, will feature a panel of students and educators discussing the current classroom climate in terms of student and teacher voice\, freedom of speech in the school setting\, social media as a means of civic action\, and opportunities for student civic action both inside and outside their schools. The panel will address current social and political climates and best practices for identifying and managing polarization in our school communities\, as well as the ability for civic education to empower students to effect positive change. Students and educators will share resources and tools they have used and plan to use in order to promote civil discourse and greater shared understanding between and among competing interests and perspectives. Registrants will have an opportunity to engage with the panel during a closing Q&A.

AMERICAN LESSON PLAN: TEACHING US HISTORY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS (bit.ly/AHAlesson) confirmed what America’s educators know: US history teachers are public servants whose primary concern is helping their students learn central elements of our nation’s history. \nThe panelists will discuss the findings of the report and how teachers are also preparing to use the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding to engage students in civics and a deeper understanding of our past. \nTopics of discussion will include how teachers:\n• Encourage students to read and understand founding documents to prepare them for informed civic engagement.\n• Navigate this moment and focus on history through primary sources and lessons designed to help students learn to think critically\, while developing an understanding of the importance of civic participation.\n• Make curricular decisions over the materials they use\, despite the challenges of legislative actions and local and state mandates.\n• Rely on educational resources from a short list of trusted sites led by federal institutions including the Library of Congress\, the National Archives\, and Smithsonian museums.\n• Are thinking about the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding as an opportunity to engage students in a deeper understanding of our national origin story.

DESCRIPTION:In this seminar\, we consider the scope of rights granted to Americans by the First Amendment and examine both the benefits and drawbacks of free speech in the era of digital platforms like Facebook\, YouTube\, Twitch\, and TikTok. Participants will understand why disinformation and hate speech are protected by the First Amendment and consider why disagreement is not an infringement of free speech. Learn more about how digital platforms are reshaping people’s ideas about the scope and limitations of freedom of expression\, and discuss approaches to regulating harmful content including de-platforming\, content moderation\, and cancel culture.\nLet’s discuss: Who’s responsible for quality of digital content? What are the civic responsibilities of media creators\, consumers\, and the digital platforms we use for information\, entertainment\, and social relationships?
