SUMMARY:Navigating Narratives: Starting Thoughtful Conversations on Israel-Palestine
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, students will engage in a two-part interactive workshop about the Israel-Hamas War. The event will equip students with the tools necessary to have civil and informed conversations about the Israel-Palestine conflict through two breakout room activities: (1) an activity helping students recognize bias and misinformation on social media\, and (2) an activity helping students thoughtfully express their viewpoints on the war and listen to the ideas of their peers. \nThe session will be hosted by the Education Department at the Institute for Youth in Policy (YIP)\, which develops student-created\, non-partisan\, and discourse-based civics education resources seeking to combat today’s polarization crisis. The specific activities in this workshop were developed by two high school students of Jewish and Muslim backgrounds who sought to start thoughtful dialogues and build understanding among their peers on this challenging topic. The event will also be supported by fellow CivXNow Coalition member organization Essential Partners\, which will be providing the reflection worksheet used in the second activity.

SUMMARY:The Constitutional History of the Constitution State (exhibit)
DESCRIPTION:Connecticut is known by many names\, including the Nutmeg State\, the Provision State\, and the Land of Steady Habits. But its official nickname is the Constitution State. Connecticut has a long constitutional history spanning from the 17th century to the present day. Four different documents have served as the basis of our government\, and each of them has reflected great social and civic changes in the state and the nation. Come explore the stories behind each of these documents and the people who shaped them through a panel exhibit in the historic Comptroller’s Office at Connecticut’s Old State House. \nLocated in downtown Hartford\, Connecticut’s Old State House served as one of Connecticut’s state capitols from 1796 to 1878 and Hartford City Hall from 1878-1915. Beautifully restored and preserved\, this museum and civic space was declared one of the first National Historic Landmarks in 1960 and now operates under a public/private partnership between the Connecticut General Assembly and The Connecticut Democracy Center. \nPlan your visit to Connecticut’s Old State House at ctoldstatehouse.org. Admission to the exhibit is included in your price of regular admission to the museum. \nLearn more about the Connecticut Democracy Center’s Civic Learning Week programming at ctdemocracycenter.org/civic-learning-week.

SUMMARY:Connecticut's History of Voting Rights tour
DESCRIPTION:Take a journey through time as you explore Connecticut’s Old State House and learn about key points in our state’s voting history. Visitors will learn about how the right to vote has expanded and contracted over time and how the question of “Who gets to vote?” has impacted the lives of Connecticut residents from the 1600s through today. This tour also explores themes of civic participation and the ways that Connecticut residents have made their voices heard when they could not do so at the polls. \nLocated in downtown Hartford\, Connecticut’s Old State House served as one of Connecticut’s state capitols from 1796 to 1878 and Hartford City Hall from 1878-1915. SUMMARY:Civic Education in the AI Age
DESCRIPTION:Since the introduction of ChatGPT to the public in late 2022\, there has been no shortage of commentary about how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies will change all aspects of society\, from scientific discovery to employment to education and beyond. The impact of AI on civic education has received considerably less attention. How if at all will AI change civic education? Should it? \nThis event will aim to demystify these questions\, building on the work of the CivXNow Coalition Working Group on AI which convened regularly in fall 2023. Featuring thought leaders in both civic education and AI\, the panel will examine how the civic education field can leverage the power of AI tools to improve civic education outcomes. It will also consider how AI creates a sharper need for civic education to help students adapt to risks associated with AI. These include\, for example\, the growth of synthetic media used to undermine trust in democratic institutions and the online information environment. \nPanelists representing a range of perspectives will offer recommendations for educators\, researchers\, and policymakers. The goal is to use this event to pave the way for further engagement on this topic within the civic education community and with policymakers.

SUMMARY:Untangling the Tally: Barriers to Voting
DESCRIPTION:Elections have changed through the decades\, but one thing has always remained the same: voting is not easy for everyone. For many eligible voters\, it is actually near impossible. Issues of accessibility\, convenience\, transportation\, time constraints\, and a slew of other complications have always plagued Election Day. And the reasons so many citizens can’t make it to the polls\, or choose not to go at all\, go beyond just physical barriers. \nJoin our panel of experts: Yanidsi Vélez\, Hispanic Federation CT State Director; Steven Hernandez\, Executive Director of the General Assembly’s Commission on Women\, Children and Seniors\, Equity and Opportunity; and Doris Maldonado\, CT Council on Developmental Disabilities Chair\, and Joe Goldman\, Civics Teacher at E.O. Smith High School in Mansfield as they discuss the barriers that many citizens face to have their votes counted on Election Day. Moderated by Val Ramos\, Director of Strategic Alliances at Everyday Democracy. \nThis program is pre-recorded. \nLearn more about the Connecticut Democracy Center’s Civic Learning Week programming at ctdemocracycenter.org/civic-learning-week.
