DESCRIPTION:Learn to advocate for issues that matter to you and influence the leaders who will make decisions about those issues. \nStudents will learn what advocacy is and multiple strategies for advocacy at the state government level. They will learn how bills are proposed and the steps they go through to be considered and passed. Other forms of advocacy such as letter writing\, submitting testimony\, editorial letters\, media campaigns and grass roots advocacy will also be discussed. As we head into a new year with midterm elections on the horizon\, tariffs shaking global markets\, a disrupted farm economy\, and the national debt at historic highs\, this program asks a simple question: why is everything so expensive\, and what does that mean for communities like Kansas City? Join American Public Square for a candid\, fact-checked conversation about the forces shaping our wallets. Our panel of economic experts will unpack the pressures behind the rising cost of living and explore solutions we may be overlooking. In-person and virtual options available. Doors will open at 5:30 PM for a Member Happy Hour. The event will start at 6 PM\, followed by a post-event “After the Square” reception open to all attendees. \nAmerican Public Square provides forums to build stronger\, more connected communities through civil discourse\, engagement\, and education. Sixty-nine percent of young people see a nation more divided than ever. Only 11 percent believe the country is generally headed in the right direction. \nAdults often hear those numbers and diagnose youth disengagement. But that misreads what’s happening. Young people care deeply about their communities. They have thoughtful ideas about what could work better. They want to contribute in meaningful ways. \n\nWe don’t need to convince young people to care. DESCRIPTION:This in-person session at the State House will provide an opportunity for students\, educators and others to engage with legislators and their staff members to make the case for continued investment by the state in civic education. Panelists will include students and teachers from schools that have benefitted from the Civics Teaching and Learning Grants. The panel will also discuss legislative advocacy and the role of the legislative process in supporting civics education. Many panelists are still to be finalized\, but Senator Becca Rausch\, a long time champion for civic education\, will speak. Other speakers will include legislators and/or legislative staff\, educators who have advocated for civics learning in the legislative process\, student activists\, and more. \nThis session is organized by the Massachusetts Civic Learning Coalition.
