SUMMARY:Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition - St. Louis Region
DESCRIPTION:The Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition was founded by The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) in 1979 and is BAMSL’s most established program. The program is supported by the Saint Louis Bar Foundation and the Missouri Lawyer Trust Account Foundation. \nAs BAMSL’s only statewide Law-Related Education program\, the Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition serves over 500 students from more than 40 schools throughout Missouri and is supported by up to 400 attorneys who volunteer as coaches\, judges\, and evaluators. The mock trials are structured like real courtroom trials and follow the same rules and procedures\, so students learn first-hand how the legal system works and what role judges\, lawyers\, juries\, and witnesses play in the court system. This increased understanding helps students develop a deeper appreciation for our justice system and the administration of justice. The competition also helps students develop and improve their public speaking and critical thinking skills. \nVolunteers are needed to serve as presiding judges (sit on the bench and rule on objections\, keep the trial moving\, etc.) and jurors (sit in the jury box and score aspects of the trial presentation) for the Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition. \nNo mock trial experience necessary. Presiding judges must be licensed attorneys. Jurors may be anyone with at least a bachelor’s degree. \nThe trials will be held at the St. Louis County Courts Building (105 S Central Ave). SUMMARY:Deliberations.US: The Electoral College
DESCRIPTION:Deliberations.US is designed to decrease toxic polarization and increase civil discourse\, fostering common understanding across a wide range of people through fact-based\, inclusive and nonpartisan civil online deliberation events. Deliberations.US presents participants with short\, engaging videos and briefing materials on complicated social and political issues. Then\, via a video discussion platform designed to facilitate small group deliberation\, we track the attitudes of participants as they discuss those issues. While each group is a cultivated mix of 8-12 people\, the platform can accommodate an unlimited number of groups simultaneously.\nTo ensure that we remain nonpartisan and effectively illustrate all sides of every relevant issue\, all platform media and materials are thoughtfully curated by a carefully assembled panel of notable professors and professionals in the democracy and deliberation fields with topic specific expertise. The result is an experience that will change how participants view each other and their own ability to have thoughtful and productive conversations on important issues facing their communities. Our technology leverages the comfort of Zoom-like platforms\, enabling participation easily and safely from home\, work\, or a school campus and can also be applied to in-person settings. Our data shows that deliberation not only produces more informed\, empathetic\, and optimistic citizens\, it also demonstrates that\, when given the facts\, the best arguments from all sides\, and the opportunity to speak with a diverse group of peers\, Americans can find common ground and respect for differing opinions on an otherwise divisive issue.\nWe are currently hosting deliberations discussing The Electoral College. We have successfully deliberated this topic amongst students middle-school aged through professional graduate school students.

DESCRIPTION:The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate invites K-3rd grade classes to join us for our virtual story hour program\, Welcoming Words. This one-hour program introduces young students to an important American symbol\, the Statue of Liberty\, and the welcome that she represents to immigrants. Together we will read Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers\, a non-fiction children’s book with a powerful message about the Statue of Liberty and her striding right foot. We will discuss how Lady Liberty welcomes diverse neighbors into our American communities and students will then be encouraged to create their own symbols of welcome for new friends. \nStudents will learn about the history of the Statue of Liberty and its role as an American symbol; students will be invited to think about what makes communities welcoming places that are inclusive and respectful of differences. \nStudents are invited to share their questions and ideas\, and offer their own thoughts of symbols of welcome that resonant with their homes\, schools\, and communities.

SUMMARY:StoryWorks Theater Presents Teaching the Constitution Through Theater: Beautiful Agitators Virtual Play and Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:Beautiful Agitators\, a theatrical play about Vera Mae Pigee\, a hair stylist and business owner in Clarksdale\, Mississippi\, and one of the unsung heroes of the civil rights era. Using her beauty parlor as a hub for Delta-based organizing and resistance\, Pigee operated her salon by day and then transformed it into a clandestine center for civil rights organization and education in the evenings. Known for her big hats and larger than life personality\, Mrs. Pigee led the direct action that registered nearly 6\,000 African Americans to vote in the region. Although Pigee was largely left out of the history books\, along with many women of the movement\, our play Beautiful Agitators and accompanying curriculum revives her legacy\, highlighting her methods and tactics. \nJoin StoryWorks Theater’s Jenna Welch\, Aallyah Wright and Rebecca Welch Weigel for a brief introduction of Beautiful Agitators\, a virtual play and corresponding curriculum.

SUMMARY:Engaging Students for an Informed Democracy: The Role of K-12 Schools in Growing Voters
DESCRIPTION:Young people want to learn about elections in school and\, when they do\, they’re more likely to vote\, engage in their communities\, and become engaged and informed members of our self-governing society. Join us for a brief 20 minute research presentation and 25 minute Q&A hosted by CIRCLE on how K-12 schools can play a role in preparing young people for participation in our nation’s constitutional democracy. We will share major findings and recommendations from the CIRCLE Growing Voters report about teens’ civic learning experiences\, or lack thereof\, and the role of schools in a paradigm-shifting framework for supporting young people’s civic development. We will examine how multiple stakeholders in the K-12 schools ecosystem\, including students\, teachers\, and administrators can work together to support young people’s democratic education and participation and outline the practical steps they can take to ensure each and every student\, especially those from disadvantaged or marginalized communities\, receives a high-quality civic education that prepares them to be engaged members of their community and our democracy.

SUMMARY:A Conversation with American Diplomat and Author Richard Haass
DESCRIPTION:DemocracyReady NY Convener Michael Rebell discusses the relationship between civic education and national security with Dr. Richard Haass\, who is in his twentieth year as president of the Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. Haass served in the State Department under Presidents George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan\, the White House under George H.W. Bush\, and the Pentagon during the Carter administration. He was US envoy to the Cyprus negotiations and the Northern Ireland peace process\, and after 9/11 was US coordinator for the future of Afghanistan. Dr. Haass is the author or editor of fourteen books on American foreign policy and one book on management. His latest book\, The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens\, was published by Penguin Press in January 2023. A Rhodes Scholar\, Dr. Haass holds a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College\, a doctorate of philosophy degree from Oxford University\, and numerous honorary degrees. He is the recipient of the State Department’s Distinguished Honor Award\, the Presidential Citizens Medal\, and the Tipperary International Peace Award. Dr. Haass was born in Brooklyn and lives in New York City.
