SUMMARY:The Power of the Youth Vote
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this event is to encourage young people to vote and if they are not yet age eligible to vote\, to at least register and preregister to vote. Kelly Siegel-Stechler\, a Senior Researcher from the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning (CIRCLE) will share data on how the youth vote makes a difference. Kelly’s work is primarily focused on projects that advance civic learning and development in K-12 education\, as well as questions related to youth political and electoral engagement. Celia Johnson\, President and CEO of Massachusetts Women of Color Coalition will discuss the importance of young people of color voting and what MAWOCC is doing to encourage their participation in civic engagement. They will be followed by students from two different communities explaining their views on why it is important for young adults to vote and their projects for promoting youth voter engagement. The speakers will answer questions from the viewing audience.

SUMMARY:Civic Education + Civic Language: What Should We Say?
DESCRIPTION:The words we use in our civic lives–our civic language–have become deeply coded and loaded\, leaving little space for productive discussion within our communities. Where we used to think we were just saying words\, we now realize we are speaking in signals–sometimes constructive\, sometimes destructive\, sometimes intentional\, sometimes unintentional. \nThis is especially true in the civic learning and education space. \nPhilanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE) leads the Civic Language Perceptions Project to hear from Americans about their perceptions of and relationships with words frequently used in democracy and civic engagement work. Building on the civic language research PACE conducted in 2021-2022\, PACE is excited to share updated research from its 2023 nationally representative survey of 5000 American registered voters. \nJoin us on Friday\, March 15th from 1:00-2:15pm ET for “Civic Education + Civic Language: What Should We Say?” where we will share data to answer questions like: \n– How do people who report having civic education perceive civic language? How is that different from their non-civic education counterparts\, and what has changed in two years? \n– Which types of civic education (middle school\, high school\, college/university\, adult continuing education\, out-of-classroom\, etc) translate to civic language positivity? \n– Do people who have civic education think American democracy is working for them\, people like them\, or someone else? \n– What should we say? \nThis event is open to the public and developed as part of Civic Learning Week. SUMMARY:Virutal Field Trip - "Our Girls Over There" : The Hello Girls in World War I
DESCRIPTION:On March 2\, 1918\, a U.S. Army Signal Corps unit boarded the Celtic\, a transport ship\, destined for England and eventually the battlefields of France. The unit\, comprised of female telephone operators\, would make history as first women to actively support combat operations on a regular basis. In doing so\, they paved the way for expanded roles for women both in the U.S. Army and at home. \nTelephone communications were vital to the success of U.S. Army operations during World War I. The first troops shipped overseas were members of the U.S. Army Signal Corps to establish telephone lines at the front. These lines required hundreds of operators to connect calls between the front and higher headquarters. The Army turned to French speaking\, female\, telephone operators to connect calls. Over 200 women served the American Expeditionary Forces in the First\, Second\, and Third Army Headquarters. The women\, nicknamed the “Hello Girls\,” worked tirelessly\, under at times combat conditions\, to connect calls on behalf of the Army. \nExplore the commitment\, sacrifice and challenges of the Hello Girls during World War I. Learn more about how these female telephone operators were recruited for specific skills and how their contributions were critical to effective U.S. Army wartime communications. Also examine how they fought to achieve appropriate recognition and military benefits after the war. This Virtual Field Trip is supported by the U.S. Army Women’s Museum.

DESCRIPTION:After a video demonstrating the mechanism of perception which produces optical illusions and prevents accurate assessment of visual information\, we notice that the same mechanism seems to be at work in the ways we interact with each other. We are swamped in perception wars\, because the assumptions which keep us in our positions\, Us-Against-Them\, reside in narratives that own us\, that we can’t see out of. To experience a way of being together different from the one perception enables and enforces\, we engage with each other in physical exercises and activities\, some as simple as a handshake.
