SUMMARY:Civic Education in a Divided Nation
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore findings from America’s Promise Alliance’s State of Young People research\, with a focus on young people’s experiences with & expectations for civic education. Young people are eager to participate in civic life—91% say that everyone should have access to civic education—yet in a moment of profound political polarization\, only 43% feel equipped to participate civically. Panelists will explore bold initiatives designed to create a more inclusive\, empowering civic learning experience & prepare all young people to participate & lead in an increasingly divided democracy.

SUMMARY:Educating for American Democracy by Doing Democracy: Revitalizing the Principles and Practice of Democracy through the Power of Experiential Learning
DESCRIPTION:In a time of deep polarization and civic disengagement\, experiential learning offers a powerful\, research-backed way to revitalize civil discourse and cultivate shared civic identity. This session\, presented by the Center for Civic Education\, Generation Citizen\, Mikva Challenge\, and the Stuart Foundation will showcase how civic education rooted in founding principles fosters transformative learning and stronger communities. This session will highlight the work done by the Task Force on Experiential Civic Learning\, and bring it to life with students who will speak to their experiences in various experiential civic programs. Drawing on decades of field experience and research\, we will highlight programs that build students’ constitutional knowledge\, strengthen discourse skills\, and nurture the dispositions of responsible\, informed engagement. Participants will explore how students in classrooms\, afterschool programs\, and community-based projects engage deeply with principles of constitutional democracy and the common good through authentic civic experiences. From simulated congressional hearings to student-led projects\, experiential learning enables young people to “do democracy” rather than just learn about it. The result is life-changing—students understand their rights\, listen across divides\, and are prepared to lead in their communities. This session offers a fast-paced overview of EAD-aligned civic learning models that work. Civic education leaders\, funders\, and policymakers will gain renewed confidence in the power of experiential learning to build civic capacity\, elevate youth voice\, and strengthen the habits required of constitutional democracy. \nBreakout Presenters:\nMichael Blauw\, Center for Civic Education\, Director of Strategic Impact and Partnerships\nAndrew Wilkes\, Generation Citizen\, Chief Voice and Policy Officer\nKathryn Bradley\, Stuart Foundation\, Director\, Purpose of Education Fund\nVerneé Green\, Mikva Challenge\, Chief Executive Officer

SUMMARY:The Civic Value of World History
DESCRIPTION:In the 21st-century United States\, conversations around civics often focus on founding documents\, constitutional principles\, federal institutions\, and the intellectual history of American politics. But the founders themselves understood their work within a global context. The Declaration of Independence\, for example\, famously addresses the people and nations of the world\, framing an argument for sovereignty by way of international recognition “among the powers of the earth.” This webinar brings together a panel of scholars and educators to discuss the civic value of world history in both secondary and post-secondary contexts. How can international understanding and awareness of global perspectives inform civic engagement? Why do we teach world history? And how might educators engage students\, parents\, administrators\, and policymakers in fruitful conversations about a global past. \nModerated by Kenneth Pomeranz (Univ. of Chicago)\, this hour-long AHA Learn event features Judi Freeman (World History Association)\, Lois MacMillan (Grants Pass High Sch.)\, Ruth Mostern (Univ. of Pittsburgh)\, and Jesse Spohnholz (Washington State Univ.).

SUMMARY:Why is EVERYTHING So Expensive? Unpacking the High Cost of Living
DESCRIPTION:Groceries. Rent. Childcare. Utilities. Health Care. Under both Democratic and Republican administrations\, the cost of living keeps climbing and no one seems to agree on what’s driving the squeeze or how to fix it. As we head into a new year with midterm elections on the horizon\, tariffs shaking global markets\, a disrupted farm economy\, and the national debt at historic highs\, this program asks a simple question: why is everything so expensive\, and what does that mean for communities like Kansas City? Join American Public Square for a candid\, fact-checked conversation about the forces shaping our wallets. Our panel of economic experts will unpack the pressures behind the rising cost of living and explore solutions we may be overlooking. In-person and virtual options available. Doors will open at 5:30 PM for a Member Happy Hour. The event will start at 6 PM\, followed by a post-event “After the Square” reception open to all attendees. \nAmerican Public Square provides forums to build stronger\, more connected communities through civil discourse\, engagement\, and education. We host fact-based conversations about urgent topics\, convening subject matter experts and creating community spaces for necessary discussions. APS champions the ideals of a civil society—where community members engage respectfully\, collaborate on shared challenges\, and pursue their aspirations with purpose. We are hosting this event in partnership with the National WWI Museum and Memorial\, America’s leading institution dedicated to remembering\, interpreting and understanding the Great War and its enduring impact on the global community.

SUMMARY:2026 Civic Learning Week Legislative Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:America turns 250 this year. As we celebrate the past\, we also need to invest in the future.\n\nPlease join us for a free breakfast on Wednesday\, March 11 from 7-8 a.m. for a moderated panel of young people sharing what democracy needs to thrive – and what you can do to help them show up\, lead\, and stay engaged. \nYoung people see democracy more clearly than many adults realize. They see dysfunction\, partisanship gridlock\, and decisions made without them about the world they’ll inherit for the next 50 years. \nThe numbers prove it. Sixty-nine percent of young people see a nation more divided than ever. Only 11 percent believe the country is generally headed in the right direction. \nAdults often hear those numbers and diagnose youth disengagement. But that misreads what’s happening. Young people care deeply about their communities. They have thoughtful ideas about what could work better. They want to contribute in meaningful ways. \n\nWe don’t need to convince young people to care. We need to create clear\, accessible pathways that allow them to make a real and immediate impact. \nPlease join us for this important and inspiring conversation! \nDate: Wednesday\, March 11\, 2026\nTime: 7:00 am to 8:00 am (panel discussion will start at 7:30 a.m.)\nLocation: Sibley Room\, 2nd Floor\, Capitol Ridge Hotel (161 St. Anthony Avenue\, St Paul\, MN 55103). Easiest access is from the front entrance\, main lobby elevators. \nA complimentary breakfast buffet will be served. Parking lot payment codes will be provided to all attendees upon exit. \nQuestions? Contact Amy Anderson\, Executive Director\, YMCA Center for Youth Voice: amy.anderson@ymcamn.org / 612-330-3045
