The film is screening globally at U.S. Embassies\, American Corners\, Universities\, and High Schools\, thanks to the U.S. State Department and NATO classifying media literacy as a strategic defense initiative. Real stories filmed around the world demonstrate how online manipulation leads to real repercussions. SUMMARY:Engaging Students for an Informed Democracy: The Role of K-12 Schools in Growing Voters
DESCRIPTION:Young people want to learn about elections in school and\, when they do\, they’re more likely to vote\, engage in their communities\, and become engaged and informed members of our self-governing society. Join us for a brief 20 minute research presentation and 25 minute Q&A hosted by CIRCLE on how K-12 schools can play a role in preparing young people for participation in our nation’s constitutional democracy. We will share major findings and recommendations from the CIRCLE Growing Voters report about teens’ civic learning experiences\, or lack thereof\, and the role of schools in a paradigm-shifting framework for supporting young people’s civic development. We will examine how multiple stakeholders in the K-12 schools ecosystem\, including students\, teachers\, and administrators can work together to support young people’s democratic education and participation and outline the practical steps they can take to ensure each and every student\, especially those from disadvantaged or marginalized communities\, receives a high-quality civic education that prepares them to be engaged members of their community and our democracy.

SUMMARY:StoryWorks Theater Presents Teaching the Constitution Through Theater: Beautiful Agitators Virtual Play and Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:Beautiful Agitators\, a theatrical play about Vera Mae Pigee\, a hair stylist and business owner in Clarksdale\, Mississippi\, and one of the unsung heroes of the civil rights era. Using her beauty parlor as a hub for Delta-based organizing and resistance\, Pigee operated her salon by day and then transformed it into a clandestine center for civil rights organization and education in the evenings. Known for her big hats and larger than life personality\, Mrs. Pigee led the direct action that registered nearly 6\,000 African Americans to vote in the region. Although Pigee was largely left out of the history books\, along with many women of the movement\, our play Beautiful Agitators and accompanying curriculum revives her legacy\, highlighting her methods and tactics. \nJoin StoryWorks Theater’s Jenna Welch\, Aallyah Wright and Rebecca Welch Weigel for a brief introduction of Beautiful Agitators\, a virtual play and corresponding curriculum.

DESCRIPTION:Deliberations.US is designed to decrease toxic polarization and increase civil discourse\, fostering common understanding across a wide range of people through fact-based\, inclusive and nonpartisan civil online deliberation events. Deliberations.US presents participants with short\, engaging videos and briefing materials on complicated social and political issues. Then\, via a video discussion platform designed to facilitate small group deliberation\, we track the attitudes of participants as they discuss those issues. While each group is a cultivated mix of 8-12 people\, the platform can accommodate an unlimited number of groups simultaneously.\nTo ensure that we remain nonpartisan and effectively illustrate all sides of every relevant issue\, all platform media and materials are thoughtfully curated by a carefully assembled panel of notable professors and professionals in the democracy and deliberation fields with topic specific expertise. The result is an experience that will change how participants view each other and their own ability to have thoughtful and productive conversations on important issues facing their communities. Our technology leverages the comfort of Zoom-like platforms\, enabling participation easily and safely from home\, work\, or a school campus and can also be applied to in-person settings. Our data shows that deliberation not only produces more informed\, empathetic\, and optimistic citizens\, it also demonstrates that\, when given the facts\, the best arguments from all sides\, and the opportunity to speak with a diverse group of peers\, Americans can find common ground and respect for differing opinions on an otherwise divisive issue.\nWe are currently hosting deliberations discussing The Electoral College. We have successfully deliberated this topic amongst students middle-school aged through professional graduate school students.

DESCRIPTION:This program presents a brief history of the New Hampshire Presidential Primary\, from its origins during the Progressive era of the early twentieth century\, through its evolution to the most important step toward being elected President of the United States. Based around segments from the documentary “The Premier Primary\, New Hampshire and Presidential Elections” this program focuses on several memorable moments such as Senator Muskie crying in front of the Union Leader office\, and who paid for Ronald Reagan’s microphone. Clips from the documentary are interspersed with discussion and questions about how New Hampshire came to hold this important political event every four years. Led by John Gfroerer\, who has produced several documentaries about New Hampshire’s political history\, including “The Premier Primary.” Presented by John Gfroerer. \nThrough Humanities to Go\, our statewide speakers bureau\, nonprofit organizations and community groups can offer high quality cultural programming to the public at minimal cost to the host. SUMMARY:Finding Common Ground: Rebuilding Democracy
DESCRIPTION:The Youth Leadership Initiative of the UVA Center for Politics wants to promote civil discourse and reaching compromise in an effort to rebuild democratic traditions. Students at the UVA Center for Politics created an Emmy nominated documentary\, “Common Grounds” that follows their experiences learning to listen\, appreciate\, and compromise on the views of their peers. This 29 minute film provides insight into what is needed to get political discourse back on track. Following the documentary staff from the Youth Leadership Initiative will guide viewers through the “Talking Turkey: Taking the ‘Dis’ Out of Civil Discourse” resources found on the www.youthleadership.net website. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, facilitators from Mosaic: Interfaith Youth Action will demonstrate how experiential education is a key intervention for interfaith understanding and social justice\, inviting participants to learn through sharing & activities. Attendees will have the opportunity to first be participants\, playing games and engaging in the learning process first-hand\, before facilitators elaborate on the pedagogy that structures this method\, which draws significantly on David Kolb’s Experiential Learning Model (experience plus reflection equals transference and new knowledge). This method—developed at Mosaic—focuses on centering and amplifying youth voices to harness the insights of experience through expert facilitation and guidance. This pedagogy affords both a safe and brave space for youth to engage in meaningful dialogue about their faith-based traditions\, their multidimensional identities\, and how these experiences and identities call them towards social action.

SUMMARY:Supporting Civics and Inquiry with the Investigating History Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:How do we provide all students with a history education that is culturally responsive\, civically engaged\, and inquiry-based? For the past two years\, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has been developing and piloting a comprehensive middle school curriculum\, called Investigating History\, intended to achieve this goal; it will be released as a free resource beginning in Summer 2023. In this session\, we will preview how the Investigating History materials have been designed to build students’ civic knowledge\, skills\, and dispositions while engaging them with multiple voices and perspectives from the past and present. We will share initial trends about where teachers have seen successes and challenges with the curriculum and what we’ve learned about how to help teachers make these types of pedagogical shifts. We will also be joined by teachers who have used Investigating History in their classrooms to speak firsthand about their and their students’ experiences with the curriculum.

DESCRIPTION:Now’s The Time opens at the dawn of Reconstruction\, the Civil War has just ended but the nation is plunged again into crisis with the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Andrew Johnson ascends to the Presidency determined to restore white supremacy in the South. Congressional radicals led by Thaddeus Stevens are fighting for a different vision. They intend to create a new society of full racial equality\, where Black Americans will have real economic and political power\, including ownership of land confiscated from the rebels\, education\, suffrage and election to public office. This titanic political battle between President and Congress culminates in the first impeachment and trial of a U.S. president\, and to more than 150 years of continuing violence and discrimination against Black Americans. \nJoin StoryWorks Theater’s Jenna Welch and Rebecca Welch Weigel for an introduction to Now’s The Time\, a virtual play and corresponding curriculum.
