SUMMARY:Uncommon Ground: Grant Wood and Russell Lee’s Divergent View of Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Join art historian James Swensen to explore Iowa through the divergent views of two artists. When Russell Lee traveled to Iowa in December 1936\, he might have expected to find something out of a Grant Wood painting. Instead\, the photographer in the employ of Roosevelt’s New Deal found a very different scene of destitute farmers facing a hardscrabble existence. The presentation will examine how Lee’s work in Iowa was influenced by Wood and how Lee’s portrait of the state challenged the pastoral and idealized vision for which Wood had become famous.

DESCRIPTION:Webinar\, with author Stacy Schiff \nThomas Jefferson asserted that if there was any leader of the American Revolution\, “Samuel Adams was the man.” John Adams believed its true history could not be written without him. With high-minded ideals and bare-knuckle tactics\, Adams led what could be called the greatest campaign of civil resistance in American history. A singular figure at a singular moment\, Adams packaged and amplified the Boston Massacre. He helped mastermind the Boston Tea Party. Shrewd\, eloquent\, and intensely disciplined\, he supplied the moral backbone of the contest with Great Britain. He employed every tool in an innovative arsenal to rally a town\, a colony\, and eventually a band of colonies behind him\, creating the cause that created a country. For his efforts\, he became the most wanted man in America: When Paul Revere rode to Lexington in 1775\, it was to warn Samuel Adams that he was about to face arrest for treason. \nStacy Schiff is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of\, among books\, A Great Improvisation: Franklin\, France\, and the Birth of America\, Cleopatra: A Life\, and The Witches: Salem\, 1692. A recipient of various awards\, including an NEH grant and a Guggenheim Fellowship\, she is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

SUMMARY:A Conversation with American Diplomat and Author Richard Haass
DESCRIPTION:DemocracyReady NY Convener Michael Rebell discusses the relationship between civic education and national security with Dr. Richard Haass\, who is in his twentieth year as president of the Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. Haass served in the State Department under Presidents George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan\, the White House under George H.W. Bush\, and the Pentagon during the Carter administration. He was US envoy to the Cyprus negotiations and the Northern Ireland peace process\, and after 9/11 was US coordinator for the future of Afghanistan. Dr. Haass is the author or editor of fourteen books on American foreign policy and one book on management. His latest book\, The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens\, was published by Penguin Press in January 2023. A Rhodes Scholar\, Dr. Haass holds a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College\, a doctorate of philosophy degree from Oxford University\, and numerous honorary degrees. He is the recipient of the State Department’s Distinguished Honor Award\, the Presidential Citizens Medal\, and the Tipperary International Peace Award. Dr. Haass was born in Brooklyn and lives in New York City.
