SUMMARY:From Declaration to Statehood: How Slovakia Claimed Sovereignty
DESCRIPTION:Live webinar: What does it take to become a sovereign state for a small and young nation? Declarations of independence are often associated with the 18th century\, but how do they work in the modern world? This webinar explores Slovakia’s Declaration of Independence and the specific way sovereignty was asserted during the peaceful breakup of Czechoslovakia— and it was not the first time in history. The session offers historical context useful for teaching nationalism\, national myths\, state formation\, and independence movements. The presenter is an educator from Slovakia. International participation is expected\, as well.

SUMMARY:Understanding Young People’s Political and Civic Engagement as a Counter to Democratic Backsliding
DESCRIPTION:As democracies around the world face increasing pressure\, from voter suppression and disinformation to disengagement and distrust\, young people are stepping up to defend and reimagine civic life. This session examines how youth political and civic engagement is not only a sign of hope\, but a strategic response to democratic backsliding. \nTogether\, we’ll explore how young people are organizing movements\, influencing policy\, and demanding representation in systems that have historically marginalized their voices. We’ll dive into the data and real-world examples that show how youth-led action can reinvigorate democratic institutions and create a more equitable future. \nParticipants will leave with a clearer understanding of what drives youth civic participation\, the systemic barriers they face\, and how educators\, organizations\, and institutions can support their leadership in meaningful\, lasting ways. \nThis session is a must-attend for anyone committed to youth empowerment and the future of democracy.

SUMMARY:Virutal Field Trip - "Our Girls Over There" : The Hello Girls in World War I
DESCRIPTION:On March 2\, 1918\, a U.S. Army Signal Corps unit boarded the Celtic\, a transport ship\, destined for England and eventually the battlefields of France. The unit\, comprised of female telephone operators\, would make history as first women to actively support combat operations on a regular basis. In doing so\, they paved the way for expanded roles for women both in the U.S. Army and at home. \nTelephone communications were vital to the success of U.S. Army operations during World War I. The first troops shipped overseas were members of the U.S. Army Signal Corps to establish telephone lines at the front. These lines required hundreds of operators to connect calls between the front and higher headquarters. The Army turned to French speaking\, female\, telephone operators to connect calls. Over 200 women served the American Expeditionary Forces in the First\, Second\, and Third Army Headquarters. The women\, nicknamed the “Hello Girls\,” worked tirelessly\, under at times combat conditions\, to connect calls on behalf of the Army. \nExplore the commitment\, sacrifice and challenges of the Hello Girls during World War I. Learn more about how these female telephone operators were recruited for specific skills and how their contributions were critical to effective U.S. Army wartime communications. Also examine how they fought to achieve appropriate recognition and military benefits after the war. This Virtual Field Trip is supported by the U.S. Army Women’s Museum.

SUMMARY:Civic Education + Civic Language: What Should We Say?
DESCRIPTION:The words we use in our civic lives–our civic language–have become deeply coded and loaded\, leaving little space for productive discussion within our communities. Where we used to think we were just saying words\, we now realize we are speaking in signals–sometimes constructive\, sometimes destructive\, sometimes intentional\, sometimes unintentional. \nThis is especially true in the civic learning and education space. \nPhilanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE) leads the Civic Language Perceptions Project to hear from Americans about their perceptions of and relationships with words frequently used in democracy and civic engagement work. Building on the civic language research PACE conducted in 2021-2022\, PACE is excited to share updated research from its 2023 nationally representative survey of 5000 American registered voters. \nJoin us on Friday\, March 15th from 1:00-2:15pm ET for “Civic Education + Civic Language: What Should We Say?” where we will share data to answer questions like: \n– How do people who report having civic education perceive civic language? How is that different from their non-civic education counterparts\, and what has changed in two years? \n– Which types of civic education (middle school\, high school\, college/university\, adult continuing education\, out-of-classroom\, etc) translate to civic language positivity? \n– Do people who have civic education think American democracy is working for them\, people like them\, or someone else? \n– What should we say? \nThis event is open to the public and developed as part of Civic Learning Week. Please reach out to Language@PACEfunders.org with questions. \nPACE website: www.PACEfunders.org\nCLPP website: www.PACEfunders.org/language

SUMMARY:“A Question of Respect”\, a book talk with Celinda Lake and Ed Goeas
DESCRIPTION:Join the conversation with pollsters and long time friends Ed Goeas (Republican)\, and Celinda Lake (Democrat)\, as they discuss how we can all work together in an increasingly polarized political world and make the case that the only way for America to escape its current divide is through mutual respect. America’s problems will never be resolved unless we can bridge our differences. \nBut with today’s all encompassing ‘us versus them’ mentality\, that might seem almost impossible. How did we get to this point of intense dysfunction and combativeness in both in person and online interactions? And most importantly\, how do we fix it? In their book\, “A Question of Respect”\, Ed and Celinda explore the possible roads that led us to this moment\, and how respect is the first step we need to take in order to trust one another. \nThis program is pre-recorded. \nLearn more about the Connecticut Democracy Center’s Civic Learning Week programming at ctdemocracycenter.org/civic-learning-week.

SUMMARY:Civil Conversations: Modeling Civil Discourse with Your Students
DESCRIPTION:At a time when Americans feel more divided and disconnected than ever\, teachers may find it challenging to discuss certain topics in the classroom. Democracy thrives when its citizens share a set of norms and understandings to establish common ground that’s rooted in listening\, respect\, authenticity\, and curiosity. How can teachers convey the message that polarizing topics are not necessarily toxic\, and that a healthy American democracy does not mean that everyone agrees? \nJoin hosts Ben Klutsey (Mercatus Center\, George Mason University) and Lindsey Galvao (GBH Education) as they explore the concept of civil discourse and demonstrate why civil discourse is an essential skill that needs to be encouraged and practiced in the classroom. \nIn this FREE webinar for educators of grades 6-12 you will:\n1. Explore the difference between polarization and toxic polarization.\n2. Get practical strategies for implementing civil discourse in the classroom.\n3. Preview several PBS LearningMedia resources from the new Civics Collection that will allow you to incorporate civil discourse in your pre-existing U.S. History\, Government\, or Civics curriculum.

SUMMARY:American Lesson Plan: Mapping the Landscape of Secondary US History Education
DESCRIPTION:“What are schoolchildren being taught about our nation’s history?!” Among education reformers and activists\, the question raises alarm\, often grounded in broad assumptions about the possibility for politics to shape what happens in the classroom. About two years ago\, the American Historical Association decided to take the question more literally. In the multistage Mapping the Landscape of Secondary US History Education project\, an AHA research team set out to describe the contours of a vast and varied terrain—an empirical grounding for ongoing debates and deliberations about the teaching of the American past. After a year and a half of interviewing social studies administrators\, surveying US history teachers\, coding state legislation\, and appraising district-level curricula\, the team has some answers. In this session\, the Mapping research team (historians Nick Kryczka\, Whit Barringer\, and Scot McFarlane) share their research from the field—and engage webinar participants in a discussion of how history’s civic function in K-12 education is faring in a polarized moment.

SUMMARY:Tocqueville on Faith and Civic Virtue
DESCRIPTION:Join Civic Spirit for an interactive seminar exploring faith and civic virtue through the work of Alexis de Tocqueville. \nDemocracy in America (1835\, 1840)\, which Alexis de Tocqueville wrote to teach modern democrats the “art of being free\,” is perhaps the best treatise on American civic education that we have; Tocqueville asserted in this work that America cannot remain free without widespread religious belief. In our session\, we shall explore what he meant by this startling assertion\, discuss whether it is still true today\, and consider how we\, as civic educators\, should treat the subject of religion in our classrooms. \nPresenter:\nProfessor Sandy Kessler now teaches political theory and American political thought at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City after spending most of his career at North Carolina State University in Raleigh\, NC. He is the author of Tocqueville’s Civil Religion: American Christianity and the Prospects for Freedom (1994) and the editor of Tocqueville’s Democracy in America (2000) abridged for classroom use. He is currently working on a book to be called Classic American Perspectives on Civic Education. \nCivic Spirit educates\, inspires\, and empowers schools across faith traditions to enhance civic belonging\, knowledge\, and responsibility in their student and faculty communities.
