SUMMARY:Race and Reckoning: Democracy in the Balance
DESCRIPTION:The United States emerged from World War I as the most dominant democracy ever—a model for aspiring democracies worldwide. Yet today that democracy seems increasingly fragile—as America struggles with divisions of race\, ethnicity\, and class; as the very exceptionalism that symbolized our freedom threatens to undermine our most noble aspirations; and as young people wonder whether they will have a democracy left to celebrate. \nJoin Public Kinship innovator Dr. Bobby Austin and best-selling author Ellis Cose for a conversation and Q&A about the most pressing issues facing American democracy and how civic education and civility can create a better future.

SUMMARY:TiP Talks: In conversation with teen journalists
DESCRIPTION:TiP Talks is a student led talk with Boston teen journalists sharing the process\, inspiration and take-aways from their articles. Envision 10 minutes engaging talks with a chance for audience to engage in a Q&A. Subjects range from public transportation\, climate\, sports\, anime and local issues \nOur Speakers for this talk will be: \nKetura Joseph (TiP Reporter\, Freshman) :\nKetura is a passionate young TiP reporter and student at the Brooke High School. Ketura’s passion for writing and robotics is a testament to the importance of exposing young students to diverse experiences and perspectives. As she advances into unfamiliar territory as a freshman\, Ketura understands the value of learning about Black history that goes beyond the traditional frame of slavery.\nOne of the challenges that Ketura and many other Black students face is the limited scope of Black history that is taught in schools. Often\, the focus is solely on the transatlantic slave trade and the Civil Rights Movement. While these events are significant\, they are only a small part of Black history. Comparing her own experiences\, that of teachers and college students Ketura offers a rich perspective of how teaching Black history beyond the frame of slavery empowers students and teachers. Such knowledge empowers students\, teachers\, and college students and helps promote greater appreciation for diversity and inclusivity. \nWilliam Thompson (TiP Reporter\, Freshman)\nWilliam Thompson\, a freshman at the John D. O’Bryant School of Math and Science. Who enjoys music\, sports\, and hanging out with friends. William is using his interests and experiences to bring attention to issues of bias in athletic scouting. William will be discussing how bias can take many forms\, such as racial and socioeconomic biases\, and it can have a significant impact on student-athletes from underrepresented or marginalized communities.\nBy shedding light on these issues\, William is contributing to a larger conversation about how we can create a more equitable system for all student-athletes. \nHome

SUMMARY:The State of Social Studies Education: Collaboratively Moving Forward
DESCRIPTION:National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) and Thinking Nation will host a special webinar that reviews a recent white paper published in Education Week and commissioned by Thinking Nation. The survey data gave statistics behind the anecdotes many of us know: 1. While Social Studies is deemed as critical for democracy\, it is not viewed as a priority in most school districts; 2. Professional Development does not currently effectively support social studies teachers; 3. Social Studies as a discipline is not effectively vertically aligned in most contexts. \nIn this program\, NCSS and Thinking Nation will discuss these findings\, along with other NCSS-supported research on K-12 student and educator experiences in social studies classrooms. We also are happy to have Dr. Bill Daggett of the Successful Practices Network join us for part of the webinar to provide a broader perspective about how social studies education can contribute to a broader goal of education reform. Our goal is to share how we can collaboratively work to better prioritize and resource social studies in all education contexts. This program will bring awareness of key solutions to strengthening social studies education to a diverse set of stakeholders in education. With 2024 being an election year and America’s 250th anniversary quickly approaching\, we must work together to utilize our discipline in order to preserve our constitutional democracy.\nWe hope that our conversation will kick off Civic Learning Week with exciting prospects about what the wider education community can do collectively. \nThis program makes an excellent “lunch and learn” for Central and Eastern Time participants\, and a great “mid-morning coffee break” for Pacific and Mountain Time participants!

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence\, Elections\, and the Future of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:From algorithmic news feeds to deep fakes\, AI is poised to transform people’s day to day engagement with politics. On a broader scale\, the role of AI in transnational election interference and surveillance has led to international controversy as nations around the world struggle to respond. Bridging the everyday and the international\, the National Liberty Museum and the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia present a panel exploring how AI might shift democratic norms and influence democratic procedures in our election year and in the realm of global politics. Convening a panel of industry\, academic\, and government professionals in AI and democratic monitoring\, we ask not just what is happening\, but what to do.

SUMMARY:Civil Conversations: Modeling Civil Discourse with Your Students
DESCRIPTION:At a time when Americans feel more divided and disconnected than ever\, teachers may find it challenging to discuss certain topics in the classroom. Democracy thrives when its citizens share a set of norms and understandings to establish common ground that’s rooted in listening\, respect\, authenticity\, and curiosity. How can teachers convey the message that polarizing topics are not necessarily toxic\, and that a healthy American democracy does not mean that everyone agrees? \nJoin hosts Ben Klutsey (Mercatus Center\, George Mason University) and Lindsey Galvao (GBH Education) as they explore the concept of civil discourse and demonstrate why civil discourse is an essential skill that needs to be encouraged and practiced in the classroom. \nIn this FREE webinar for educators of grades 6-12 you will:\n1. Explore the difference between polarization and toxic polarization.\n2. Get practical strategies for implementing civil discourse in the classroom.\n3. Preview several PBS LearningMedia resources from the new Civics Collection that will allow you to incorporate civil discourse in your pre-existing U.S. History\, Government\, or Civics curriculum.
