SUMMARY:Why Democracy Requires Public Education
DESCRIPTION:With misinformation on the rise and attacks on foundations of a democratic society\, we’ve seen faith in American democracy in decline. While there are immediate steps we need to take to secure our democratic process\, we should also examine the vital role public education plays in our democracy. Public education prepares people to be citizen of a democracy and to think critically. Public education is critical to having a functioning democracy.

SUMMARY:Path to Bridging
DESCRIPTION:The flourishing\, functional constitutional democracy of tomorrow requires that today’s students develop the bridge-building skills and dispositions that will equip them to collaborate across different perspectives. This will require the adults who impact their learning– parents\, educational policy-makers\, and teachers– to engage in productive ways as well. Purposeful and effective bridging at the K-12 level will see educators prepare themselves in a way that facilitates the learning required of their students\, and students will experience the sustained learning opportunities that will position them to ease this country’s polarization and ideological conflict. Join our distinguished panel to describe how and then participate in digging deeper and learning from peers on how to take your work to the next level.

SUMMARY:TiP Talks: In conversation with teen journalists
DESCRIPTION:TiP Talks is a student led talk with Boston teen journalists sharing the process\, inspiration and take-aways from their articles. Envision 10 minutes engaging talks with a chance for audience to engage in a Q&A. Subjects range from public transportation\, climate\, sports\, anime and local issues \nOur Speakers for this talk will be: \nKetura Joseph (TiP Reporter\, Freshman) :\nKetura is a passionate young TiP reporter and student at the Brooke High School. Ketura’s passion for writing and robotics is a testament to the importance of exposing young students to diverse experiences and perspectives. As she advances into unfamiliar territory as a freshman\, Ketura understands the value of learning about Black history that goes beyond the traditional frame of slavery.\nOne of the challenges that Ketura and many other Black students face is the limited scope of Black history that is taught in schools. Often\, the focus is solely on the transatlantic slave trade and the Civil Rights Movement. While these events are significant\, they are only a small part of Black history. Comparing her own experiences\, that of teachers and college students Ketura offers a rich perspective of how teaching Black history beyond the frame of slavery empowers students and teachers. Such knowledge empowers students\, teachers\, and college students and helps promote greater appreciation for diversity and inclusivity. \nWilliam Thompson (TiP Reporter\, Freshman)\nWilliam Thompson\, a freshman at the John D. O’Bryant School of Math and Science. Who enjoys music\, sports\, and hanging out with friends. William is using his interests and experiences to bring attention to issues of bias in athletic scouting. William will be discussing how bias can take many forms\, such as racial and socioeconomic biases\, and it can have a significant impact on student-athletes from underrepresented or marginalized communities.\nBy shedding light on these issues\, William is contributing to a larger conversation about how we can create a more equitable system for all student-athletes. \nHome

SUMMARY:100% Democracy: The Case for Universal Voting
DESCRIPTION:Today’s headlines are filled with arguments over restrictions on the right to vote and attempts to expand it. Miles Rapoport\, formerly CT’s Secretary of State and E.J. Dionne\, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute\, advocate for making a commitment to a ‘100% Democracy’\, an election process where every citizen has the right to vote and full opportunities to do so—but also the duty to vote\, a requirement to participate in our national choices. \nJoin Rapoport and Dionne (who will be joining us virtually) for an in-person discussion about their new book\, 100% Democracy: The Case for Universal Voting. The program will be moderated by CT Secretary of the State\, Denise Merrill and kicks off Book Talks\, a new program series at Connecticut’s Old State House. \nThe U.S. lags behind other democracies\, with only 66.8% of eligible voters participating in the record-turnout election of 2020 while twenty-six countries around the world require participation in elections. Australia\, for instance\, has required citizens to cast a ballot since 1924 and had over 90% voter turnout in their last major election. Rapoport and Dionne ask: if Americans must pay taxes and serve on juries\, why not ask—or require—every American to vote? Is it time for the United States to take a major leap forward and recognize voting as both a fundamental civil right and a solemn civic duty? \nThis program is pre-recorded. \nLearn more about the Connecticut Democracy Center’s Civic Learning Week programming at ctdemocracycenter.org/civic-learning-week.

SUMMARY:Think Critically\, Act Locally: Civic Participation Through Media Literacy & Career Exploration
DESCRIPTION:How can you motivate young people to be active civic participants? Teacher panelists join other leaders for this dynamic virtual event on the ways that applying media literacy skills and exploring public service careers can inspire civic engagement. \nThis event draws on the partnership and resources of SRVCE (Supporting Readiness through Vital Civic Empowerment)\, a free\, highly adaptable civics curriculum (https://srvce.edc.org/).
