SUMMARY:Competitive Speech & Debate Creates a Better Civil Society
DESCRIPTION:The National Speech & Debate Association was created in 1925 to provide recognition and support for students participating in speech and debate activities. While our organization has evolved over the decades\, our mission is more relevant today than ever before. We connect\, support\, and inspire a diverse community committed to empowering students through competitive speech and debate. \nNSDA membership builds confidence\, boosts classroom performance\, improves communication\, and increases critical thinking skills\, providing students with the most in-demand portable skills. More individuals who are used to applying these skills to engage in civil dialogue and civic engagement\, improves the world. \nMultiple peer reviewed studies and nearly 2 million alumni demonstrate that competitive speech and debate is one of the best ways to accomplish this.

SUMMARY:Civil Discourse: Empowering Students Now to Ensure a Brighter Future
DESCRIPTION:The National Speech & Debate Association was created in 1925 to provide recognition and support for students participating in speech and debate activities. While our organization has evolved over the decades\, our mission is more relevant today than ever before. We connect\, support\, and inspire a diverse community committed to empowering students through competitive speech and debate. \nNSDA membership builds confidence\, boosts classroom performance\, improves communication\, and increases critical thinking skills; providing students with the most in-demand portable skills. \nJoin us for a speech-by-speech analysis of a debate round on the February 2023 National Public Forum Topic\, Resolved: In the United States\, right-to-work laws do more harm than good. Analysis will include an overview of the arguments\, evidence\, and strategy that the students use during the debate. Explore firsthand how debate can empower students with the skills needed for civil discourse.

SUMMARY:The Unify Challenge
DESCRIPTION:What is the Unify Challenge? \nIt’s a guided video conversation that you’ll take with another American who may vote differently than you or be different than you in other ways. It’s a small but powerful way for everyday people to heal our national divide. \nConsider this your official invitation to step out of your “bubble.” We the People can lead the way. \nThe process: \n1. Tell us about yourself. \nThis part’s easy! Just answer a few basic questions so we can match you with the perfect partner. Your match may vote differently than you do or be someone you’d never get the chance to meet in your daily life. \n2. What you’ll need: \nYou’ll need a computer with a camera and microphone. (The Challenge DOES NOT work on your phone or a tablet.) \nGive yourself about an hour. Some partners chat longer because they get into it. Totally up to you! \nAnd you’ll need an open mind. It’s OK to disagree. In fact\, it’s great to disagree. \n3. Take the challenge and have a conversation. \nYou may be thinking… “A video conversation with a complete stranger? What will we talk about?” Don’t worry. We make it super easy. It’s a guided survey that you take together about goals for the country around issues like healthcare\, immigration\, the economy\, education\, criminal justice\, and more. You don’t have to be “into politics” — no prep needed!

SUMMARY:Today's Vote: Electoral College
DESCRIPTION:The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate invites 8th-12th grade classes to join us for a facilitated virtual Senate simulation that explores the question of whether or not a constitutional amendment should be enacted to abolish the Electoral College. In this one-hour program\, students will role-play U.S. senators as they learn about the process for electing the President of the United States\, and consider a resolution to amend or end the use of the Electoral College. \nParticipants will be introduced to the federal legislative process including resolutions and constitutional amendments; participants will gain an understanding of what the Electoral College is and how it works. \nThis session is designed for 10-20 classrooms to join via Zoom. \nThis is a participatory session that encourages students to share their ideas and questions\, listen actively to each other\, and propose legislative solutions. \nEducators are encouraged to actively facilitate their class’s participation in the program. Materials provided will support teachers in continuing to explore the topic with their students.

SUMMARY:Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition - St. Louis Region
DESCRIPTION:The Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition was founded by The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) in 1979 and is BAMSL’s most established program. The program is supported by the Saint Louis Bar Foundation and the Missouri Lawyer Trust Account Foundation. \nAs BAMSL’s only statewide Law-Related Education program\, the Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition serves over 500 students from more than 40 schools throughout Missouri and is supported by up to 400 attorneys who volunteer as coaches\, judges\, and evaluators. The mock trials are structured like real courtroom trials and follow the same rules and procedures\, so students learn first-hand how the legal system works and what role judges\, lawyers\, juries\, and witnesses play in the court system. This increased understanding helps students develop a deeper appreciation for our justice system and the administration of justice. The competition also helps students develop and improve their public speaking and critical thinking skills. \nVolunteers are needed to serve as presiding judges (sit on the bench and rule on objections\, keep the trial moving\, etc.) and jurors (sit in the jury box and score aspects of the trial presentation) for the Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition. \nNo mock trial experience necessary. Presiding judges must be licensed attorneys. Jurors may be anyone with at least a bachelor’s degree. \nThe trials will be held at the St. Louis County Courts Building (105 S Central Ave). Please arrive by 5:30 p.m. for a brief volunteer meeting. Trials start at 6 p.m. \nContact: Danny Barnett-Foster dbarnett@bamsl.org

SUMMARY:Deliberations.US: The Electoral College
DESCRIPTION:Deliberations.US is designed to decrease toxic polarization and increase civil discourse\, fostering common understanding across a wide range of people through fact-based\, inclusive and nonpartisan civil online deliberation events. Deliberations.US presents participants with short\, engaging videos and briefing materials on complicated social and political issues. Then\, via a video discussion platform designed to facilitate small group deliberation\, we track the attitudes of participants as they discuss those issues. While each group is a cultivated mix of 8-12 people\, the platform can accommodate an unlimited number of groups simultaneously.\nTo ensure that we remain nonpartisan and effectively illustrate all sides of every relevant issue\, all platform media and materials are thoughtfully curated by a carefully assembled panel of notable professors and professionals in the democracy and deliberation fields with topic specific expertise. The result is an experience that will change how participants view each other and their own ability to have thoughtful and productive conversations on important issues facing their communities. Our technology leverages the comfort of Zoom-like platforms\, enabling participation easily and safely from home\, work\, or a school campus and can also be applied to in-person settings. Our data shows that deliberation not only produces more informed\, empathetic\, and optimistic citizens\, it also demonstrates that\, when given the facts\, the best arguments from all sides\, and the opportunity to speak with a diverse group of peers\, Americans can find common ground and respect for differing opinions on an otherwise divisive issue.\nWe are currently hosting deliberations discussing The Electoral College. We have successfully deliberated this topic amongst students middle-school aged through professional graduate school students.
