SUMMARY:Perception versus Being Together
DESCRIPTION:After a video demonstrating the mechanism of perception which produces optical illusions and prevents accurate assessment of visual information\, we notice that the same mechanism seems to be at work in the ways we interact with each other. We are swamped in perception wars\, because the assumptions which keep us in our positions\, Us-Against-Them\, reside in narratives that own us\, that we can’t see out of. To experience a way of being together different from the one perception enables and enforces\, we engage with each other in physical exercises and activities\, some as simple as a handshake.

SUMMARY:Perception versus Being Together
DESCRIPTION:In unveiling the intricate workings of perception\, exposing its role in crafting optical illusions and distorting our grasp of visual reality\, we uncover a startling revelation: this very mechanism extends its reach into the fabric of our interpersonal interactions. Immersed in a battleground of perceptions\, we find ourselves entrenched in divisive narratives\, trapped within the confines of “Us-Against-Them” mentalities dictated by narratives that grip us relentlessly\, rendering us blind to alternatives. To transcend this perceptual stranglehold and cultivate a new mode of communal existence\, we embark on a journey of physical engagement and shared activities\, from the humble handshake to more elaborate exercises\, forging connections beyond the constraints of perception’s sway.

SUMMARY:Welcoming Words: Her Right Foot Story Hour
DESCRIPTION:The Kennedy Institute invites K-3rd grade classes to join us for our virtual story hour program\, Welcoming Words. This one-hour program introduces young students to an important American symbol\, the Statue of Liberty\, and the welcome that she represents to immigrants. Together we will read Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers\, a non-fiction children’s book with a powerful message about the Statue of Liberty and her striding right foot. We will discuss how Lady Liberty welcomes diverse neighbors into our American communities and students will then be encouraged to create their own symbols of welcome for new friends.
